Flan Custard Recipe

A rich baked custard, this flan is made in one dish and topped with a luxurious caramel sauce.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325 F and prepare a 10-inch pie plate or 6- to 8-cup round baking dish.

  2. Melt 1 cup of sugar in a warm saucepan over medium heat, stirring until light golden brown.

  3. Quickly pour the melted caramel into the prepared dish, tilting to coat the sides.

  4. Whisk eggs until frothy, then slowly add sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, 1/2 cup sugar, vanilla, and salt until the mixture is smooth.

  5. Place the caramel-lined dish into a large roasting pan and fill the roasting pan halfway with boiling water.

  6. Pour the custard mixture into the caramel-lined dish.

  7. Bake for about 45 minutes, or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.

  8. Cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least one hour or overnight.

  9. To serve, loosen the edges with a knife, invert onto a serving dish, and drizzle with any remaining caramel.
