A traditional long, sweet bread from Valencia, these cigar-shaped pastries are commonly enjoyed with horchata de chufa.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 360 F.

  2. Dissolve yeast in water.

  3. Combine flour and yeast mixture in a large bowl.

  4. Mix in sugar and eggs; use an electric mixer, switching to a wooden spoon if needed.

  5. Incorporate vegetable oil and salt, continuing to mix.

  6. Knead the dough until well combined.

  7. Form dough into a ball, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for about 2 hours until doubled.

  8. Flour a board and grease a cookie sheet. Pinch off dough, roll into a ball, then shape into long, cigar-shaped pieces and place on the sheet.

  9. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes until golden.

  10. While baking, whisk confectioners' sugar and lukewarm water to create a thick glaze.

  11. Brush warm baked goods with glaze. Serve warm with horchata de chufa.
