Extra-Cheesy Potato Gratin

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F (175 C).

  2. Peel, rinse, dry, and thinly slice the potatoes.

  3. Combine potatoes, milk, cream, one crushed garlic clove, salt, pepper, and nutmeg in a large saucepan.

  4. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then simmer for 10 minutes until the cream thickens.

  5. Remove the saucepan from heat, add grated Gruyère, and stir until the cheese is melted.

  6. Grease a 1 1/2 to 2-quart baking dish with 1 teaspoon butter, then rub the dish with the remaining crushed garlic clove.

  7. Pour the potato mixture into the prepared dish, ensuring all potatoes are coated.

  8. Arrange thinly sliced brie strips over the top, dot with the remaining 2 tablespoons butter, and season with salt and pepper.

  9. Bake for 40 minutes, or until golden brown and tender; cover with foil if browning too quickly. Serve immediately.
