Easy Treacle Tart

A classic treacle tart, this simple recipe yields a lovely pudding or afternoon tea treat with minimal effort.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F (180 C / Gas 4) and place a baking sheet inside.

  2. Roll out the shortcrust pastry to 1/4-inch thickness.

  3. Line a lightly greased 9-inch loose-bottomed tart tin with the pastry, trim excess edges, and chill for 30 minutes to prevent shrinkage.

  4. While chilling, combine golden syrup, treacle, lemon zest, and lemon juice.

  5. Beat the eggs, then add them to the syrup mixture.

  6. Stir the breadcrumbs into the wet mixture.

  7. After chilling, place the tart case on the preheated baking sheet, then carefully pour the filling into the prepared case.

  8. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until the crust and filling are golden brown and firm.

  9. Remove from the oven and transfer to a cooling rack.

  10. If serving warm, cool for 5 minutes on the rack before serving.

  11. Serve with crème fraiche or vanilla ice cream.
