Easy Swiss Steak

Preheat the oven to 325 F (165 C).

Season 2 to 3 pounds boneless chuck steak with 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper; then flour and pound it until flat and tender.

Heat 2 tablespoons vegetable oil in a large ovenproof skillet over medium heat. Sauté 2 sliced medium onions until translucent and lightly browned, about 10 minutes, then remove them.

Cut the floured steak into 6 pieces and brown all sides in the same skillet, in batches if necessary, adding more oil if needed.

Return the sautéed onions to the skillet over the browned steak, add 1 (28-ounce) can chopped diced tomatoes, and cover.

Bake in the preheated oven for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, or until the steak is tender.

Transfer the steak, tomatoes, and onions to a serving platter and pour the sauce from the pan over them.
