Easy Swiss Steak

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325 F (165 C).

  2. Season 2 to 3 pounds boneless chuck steak with 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper; then flour and pound it until flat and tender.

  3. Heat 2 tablespoons vegetable oil in a large ovenproof skillet over medium heat. Sauté 2 sliced medium onions until translucent and lightly browned, about 10 minutes, then remove them.

  4. Cut the floured steak into 6 pieces and brown all sides in the same skillet, in batches if necessary, adding more oil if needed.

  5. Return the sautéed onions to the skillet over the browned steak, add 1 (28-ounce) can chopped diced tomatoes, and cover.

  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, or until the steak is tender.

  7. Transfer the steak, tomatoes, and onions to a serving platter and pour the sauce from the pan over them.
