Easy Red Velvet Trifle Recipe

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 360 F.

  2. Line a baking sheet.

  3. In a mixer, beat butter, sugar, and vanilla for 5 minutes until light and fluffy.

  4. Beat in the egg.

  5. Mix in the buttermilk.

  6. Sift together cocoa powder, flour, baking powder, and baking soda, then gently beat into the batter.

  7. Add red food gel until desired color is achieved.

  8. Lightly oil the parchment and spread the cake mixture into a 10-12 inch circle.

  9. Bake for 10-12 minutes until firm.

  10. Cool for 5 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack.

  11. Once cool, cut the cake into circles to fit your chosen trifle dishes (4 individual or one large), reserving leftover crumbs for garnish.

  12. Layer cake slices in dishes, followed by mixed berries.

  13. Add a layer of custard, then repeat with cake and berries.

  14. Top with whipped cream, fruits, and reserved cake crumbs.

  15. Serve immediately, or refrigerate; if using frozen berries, refrigerate to allow thawing.
