Easy Homemade Gyros

Instructions

  1. Preheat a grill, grill pan, or large nonstick skillet over high heat.

  2. Combine 1 pound ground lamb (or beef), 2 teaspoons salt, 1 teaspoon black pepper, 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin, 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 1 teaspoon dried oregano, 2 minced garlic cloves, 1/4 cup minced red onion, and 2 teaspoons lemon juice in a large bowl.

  3. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape into oblong patties (approximately 3x6x0.5 inches), then refrigerate for one hour.

  4. Brush the hot grill or grill pan with oil, or add 2 tablespoons of oil to the skillet.

  5. Cook the patties for 3 to 4 minutes per side until cooked through with crispy edges.

  6. To assemble, spread tzatziki onto 4 rounds of flatbread or inside pita pockets.

  7. Add one lettuce leaf, sliced tomato, and thin onion slices to each bread.

  8. Place a cooked patty into each bread, fold, and serve.
