Easy French Onion Soup

A classic French onion soup features caramelized onions, beef broth, and is topped with toasted French bread and a blend of Gruyère and Parmesan cheese.

Instructions

  1. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat, then sauté sliced onions for 30-45 minutes until very soft and golden brown, stirring frequently.

  2. In a separate saucepan, combine the cooked onions with beef broth and water; bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 25-30 minutes.

  3. Meanwhile, preheat the broiler. Toast French bread slices on a foil-lined baking sheet until golden, 30-45 seconds per side.

  4. Flip the bread, divide Gruyère and Parmesan cheese among the slices, and broil for 20-30 seconds until melted.

  5. Ladle soup into bowls, float a cheese-topped bread slice in each, and garnish with extra cheese or chives, if desired.
