Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425 F.

  2. Chill a metal mixing bowl. Sift flour, baking powder, salt, and cornmeal into it.

  3. Cut in shortening with a pastry blender or fork until mixture resembles coarse meal.

  4. Stir in milk until dry ingredients are moistened.

  5. Lightly knead dough on a floured surface until cohesive.

  6. Roll dough to 3/4-inch thickness, then cut with a 2-inch biscuit cutter.

  7. Place biscuits on a baking sheet, either lined with parchment paper or ungreased.

  8. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes.
