Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F (180 C). Grease and flour a 13x9x2-inch baking pan.

  2. Combine cake mix, butter, water, oil, and half a can of sweetened condensed milk in a bowl; beat until blended.

  3. Divide the batter, reserving half. Pour the remaining batter into the prepared pan and bake for 20 minutes.

  4. Meanwhile, melt caramels with the remaining sweetened condensed milk in a saucepan over low heat, stirring until smooth.

  5. Spread the melted caramel mixture over the partially baked cake and sprinkle with chopped pecans.

  6. Evenly spoon and spread the reserved batter over the caramel and pecan layer. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 30 minutes.

  7. Cool the cake completely on a rack.

  8. For the frosting, combine butter, cocoa, and evaporated milk in a saucepan; heat and stir until butter melts and the mixture blends.

  9. Remove from heat, then add confectioners' sugar and vanilla; blend well.

  10. Spread the frosting over the cooled cake.
