Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).

  2. Peel 12 to 15 large leaves from one head of green cabbage.

  3. Start boiling salted water, then drop the cabbage leaves in, cover, and cook for 3 minutes; drain well.

  4. For the filling, combine 1 pound ground beef, 3/4 cup cooked rice, 1/2 cup chopped onion, 1 large egg, 1/4 cup milk, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, and 1 teaspoon black pepper; mix thoroughly and divide into 12 portions.

  5. Place one portion of the beef mixture onto the center of each cabbage leaf, roll, and fold in the edges to seal.

  6. Secure each roll with toothpicks and arrange them in a single layer in a large baking dish.

  7. For the sauce, combine 1 can diced tomatoes, 1 can tomato sauce, 3 tablespoons sugar, 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar, and 1/2 cup water.

  8. Pour the sauce over the cabbage rolls, cover, and bake for approximately 1 hour until tender and bubbling.

  9. Remove the rolls from the dish and discard the toothpicks.

  10. Carefully pour the pan juices into a medium saucepan and heat over medium; stir 2 tablespoons cornstarch into 1/4 cup cold water until dissolved, then add the slurry to the sauce, bringing it to a boil and simmering, whisking constantly, until thickened to your preference.

  11. Serve the cabbage rolls topped with the thickened sauce.
