Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).
-
Peel 12 to 15 large leaves from one head of green cabbage.
-
Start boiling salted water, then drop the cabbage leaves in, cover, and cook for 3 minutes; drain well.
-
For the filling, combine 1 pound ground beef, 3/4 cup cooked rice, 1/2 cup chopped onion, 1 large egg, 1/4 cup milk, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, and 1 teaspoon black pepper; mix thoroughly and divide into 12 portions.
-
Place one portion of the beef mixture onto the center of each cabbage leaf, roll, and fold in the edges to seal.
-
Secure each roll with toothpicks and arrange them in a single layer in a large baking dish.
-
For the sauce, combine 1 can diced tomatoes, 1 can tomato sauce, 3 tablespoons sugar, 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar, and 1/2 cup water.
-
Pour the sauce over the cabbage rolls, cover, and bake for approximately 1 hour until tender and bubbling.
-
Remove the rolls from the dish and discard the toothpicks.
-
Carefully pour the pan juices into a medium saucepan and heat over medium; stir 2 tablespoons cornstarch into 1/4 cup cold water until dissolved, then add the slurry to the sauce, bringing it to a boil and simmering, whisking constantly, until thickened to your preference.
-
Serve the cabbage rolls topped with the thickened sauce.
