Cut asparagus into 1-inch pieces, reserving some tips for garnish if desired.

Melt butter in a soup pot over medium heat, then add garlic and cook for 30 seconds.

Stir in stock and asparagus; simmer for 5 minutes until asparagus is tender.

Remove from heat and blend the mixture until smooth using an immersion or regular blender.

Return soup to the pot if using a regular blender. Stir in cream and heat on low, then season with salt and cayenne pepper.
