Preheat the oven to 350 F and butter a 2 to 2 1/2-quart baking dish.

Combine mashed sweet potatoes, eggs, granulated sugar, milk, salt, half of the softened butter, and vanilla in a bowl; mix thoroughly.

In a separate bowl, combine brown sugar, flour, nuts, and the remaining butter.
