Instructions

  1. Combine corn syrup, gelatin, and water in a microwave-safe bowl, stirring until the gelatin is distributed. Microwave for 30 seconds, then stir well.

  2. Pour the gelatin mixture into a stand mixer. Gradually add 2 pounds of powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing on low and scraping the bowl until a stiff dough forms.

  3. Transfer the dough to a powdered sugar-dusted surface and knead until it is satiny and no longer sticky, dusting with additional sugar as needed.

  4. Divide the dough into portions for desired colors and flavors. Flatten each portion, add food coloring and extract, then knead until the color is evenly dispersed.

  5. Roll out each colored dough portion on a powdered sugar-dusted surface to your desired thickness.

  6. Cut out heart shapes with cutters, placing them on a parchment-lined baking sheet; reroll and cut scraps.

  7. Allow the candy hearts to air-dry for at least 24 hours.

  8. Use food writing markers to add messages or designs to the dried hearts.
