Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350 F.

Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside.

Cream butter and sugar in a stand mixer until fluffy.

Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla and buttermilk.

Gradually mix in dry ingredients until just combined; finish mixing dough by hand.

Divide dough into halves, press into discs, wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Roll dough to 1/4 inch thick between parchment paper, cut out heart shapes, and place on a lined baking sheet.

Combine dough scraps, re-roll, cut more cookies, and freeze sheets for 10 minutes before baking.

Bake cookies for 10-12 minutes until edges are lightly colored and centers lose their raw shine.

Cool on baking sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Combine meringue powder and water in a mixer until frothy.

Add powdered sugar, corn syrup, and flavoring extract; mix on low, then beat on medium for 5 minutes until icing is shiny, stiff, and voluminous.

Divide icing, add desired gel food coloring, and stir.

Fill a piping bag with thick icing and outline each cookie.

Thin remaining icing with water until it flows like corn syrup, then fill inside the outlines.

Let decorated cookies dry overnight.
