Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F.

  2. Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside.

  3. Cream butter and sugar in a stand mixer until fluffy.

  4. Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla and buttermilk.

  5. Gradually mix in dry ingredients until just combined; finish mixing dough by hand.

  6. Divide dough into halves, press into discs, wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

  7. Roll dough to 1/4 inch thick between parchment paper, cut out heart shapes, and place on a lined baking sheet.

  8. Combine dough scraps, re-roll, cut more cookies, and freeze sheets for 10 minutes before baking.

  9. Bake cookies for 10-12 minutes until edges are lightly colored and centers lose their raw shine.

  10. Cool on baking sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

  11. Combine meringue powder and water in a mixer until frothy.

  12. Add powdered sugar, corn syrup, and flavoring extract; mix on low, then beat on medium for 5 minutes until icing is shiny, stiff, and voluminous.

  13. Divide icing, add desired gel food coloring, and stir.

  14. Fill a piping bag with thick icing and outline each cookie.

  15. Thin remaining icing with water until it flows like corn syrup, then fill inside the outlines.

  16. Let decorated cookies dry overnight.

  17. Write phrases on dry cookies using a food coloring marker.
