Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F and grease an 11x17-inch sheet pan.

  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour and sugar.

  3. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the butter, shortening, coffee, and cocoa; stir constantly until it boils.

  4. Pour the hot mixture over the flour and sugar, then add buttermilk, eggs, baking soda, and vanilla; mix thoroughly.

  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 20 minutes, or until a cake tester comes out clean.

  6. While baking, prepare the frosting: In a saucepan over medium heat, combine butter, cocoa, and milk; stir frequently until it boils.

  7. Stir in the powdered sugar and vanilla until the frosting is smooth.

  8. Pour the warm frosting over the brownies immediately after removing them from the oven.

  9. Allow to cool before cutting into squares.
