Classic Monte Cristo Sandwich

A classic Monte Cristo sandwich combines ham, cheese, and turkey or chicken, battered in egg and pan-fried to a golden crisp.

Instructions

  1. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and add butter to coat the pan.

  2. For each sandwich, butter one side of the first bread slice, then layer with ham and turkey or chicken.

  3. Butter both sides of a second bread slice, optionally spread with mustard or mayonnaise, and place it on the meat.

  4. Top with cheese, then add a third bread slice, buttered on one side.

  5. Press the sandwich, trim crusts, then cut diagonally into halves, securing each with a toothpick.

  6. In a bowl, beat eggs with milk and salt.

  7. Dip the sandwich halves into the egg mixture.

  8. Brown the dipped sandwiches on all sides in the skillet, adding more butter as needed.

  9. Remove toothpicks and serve immediately while hot and crispy.
