Classic French Steamed Mussels

A twist on classic French steamed mussels, this dish features garlic, white wine, butter, and green onion or shallot.

Instructions

  1. Scrub and debeard mussels.

  2. Heat butter in a lidded pot over medium-high heat. Sauté green onions until soft.

  3. Add garlic cloves, if using.

  4. Add white wine and bring to a boil. Place mussels in a single layer.

  5. Cover and steam 3-8 minutes; check after 3 minutes, ensuring all mussels open.

  6. When most mussels are open, turn off heat. Stir in green garlic, if using, and optional red pepper flakes. Cover for one minute.

  7. Serve mussels and broth, discarding any unopened mussels. Provide an extra bowl for shells.
