Classic French Flemish Beef Stew

Instructions

  1. Combine beef with flour, salt, and pepper in a large bowl.

  2. Heat canola oil and butter in a large pan, then brown the beef in batches until a rich color develops.

  3. Return all browned beef to the pan. Add onions, garlic, brown sugar, parsley, bay leaf, and thyme; stir thoroughly.

  4. Stir in the beer and enough beef stock to cover the beef. Bring to a boil, then cover, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 1 1/2 hours until tender, adding more stock if needed.

  5. Remove from heat and stir in apple cider vinegar. Let the stew stand for 10 minutes before serving.
