Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, brown 1 lb ground beef in 2 tbsp olive oil, then drain the fat.

  2. Stir in 1 large chopped onion, 2 tbsp chili powder, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, 1/4 tsp ground allspice, 1/4 tsp ground mustard, 1/4 tsp black pepper, 1/8 tsp ground cumin, 1/8 tsp cinnamon, 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper, 1/4 cup tomato paste, and 2 cups water.

  3. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 1 to 2 hours until the sauce reaches your desired thin consistency.

  4. Adjust seasoning if needed, then remove from heat, cover, and set aside.

  5. Start boiling water for the hot dogs if boiling; otherwise, prepare your grill or steamer. Cook 12 to 16 hot dogs and concurrently steam or toast the buns.

  6. Assemble by placing a cooked hot dog in a bun, topping with approximately 2 tbsp of sauce, 1 to 2 tbsp chopped onion, a drizzle of mustard, and optional shredded cheddar cheese.
