Instructions
-
In a large skillet, brown 1 lb ground beef in 2 tbsp olive oil, then drain the fat.
-
Stir in 1 large chopped onion, 2 tbsp chili powder, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, 1/4 tsp ground allspice, 1/4 tsp ground mustard, 1/4 tsp black pepper, 1/8 tsp ground cumin, 1/8 tsp cinnamon, 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper, 1/4 cup tomato paste, and 2 cups water.
-
Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 1 to 2 hours until the sauce reaches your desired thin consistency.
-
Adjust seasoning if needed, then remove from heat, cover, and set aside.
-
Start boiling water for the hot dogs if boiling; otherwise, prepare your grill or steamer. Cook 12 to 16 hot dogs and concurrently steam or toast the buns.
-
Assemble by placing a cooked hot dog in a bun, topping with approximately 2 tbsp of sauce, 1 to 2 tbsp chopped onion, a drizzle of mustard, and optional shredded cheddar cheese.
