Classic Baked Swedish Meatballs

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325 F.

  2. In a bowl, combine breadcrumbs, onion, salt, pepper, nutmeg or allspice, and milk; allow to soak for a few minutes.

  3. Stir in ground beef until blended, then form into 1-inch meatballs.

  4. Melt butter and oil in a skillet, brown meatballs in batches, and transfer to a 2 1/2-quart baking dish.

  5. Drain skillet, leaving 2 tablespoons of drippings. Stir in flour and cook over medium heat until bubbly.

  6. Add beef broth and half-and-half or light cream; cook, stirring, until sauce thickens for 1 minute.

  7. Pour sauce over meatballs in the baking dish.

  8. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes.
