Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 F.

  2. Cream butter, sugar, orange zest, and vanilla; then beat in the egg until light and fluffy.

  3. Sift dry ingredients separately and gradually blend them into the creamed mixture, alternating with milk, to form a dough.

  4. Divide the dough in half, place each portion in a plastic bag, and chill in the refrigerator for at least one hour.

  5. Roll out each dough half to 1/3-inch thick and cut into circles.

  6. Place circles on parchment-lined cookie sheets, re-roll any scraps, and bake for approximately 6 minutes without browning.

  7. Remove cookies to a rack and cool completely.

  8. Divide canned frosting into two bowls; stir black food coloring into one bowl.

  9. Frost cooled cookies with the white vanilla frosting.

  10. Pipe the black frosting onto each cookie close to the edge, swirling it to create tangled strings.

  11. While the black frosting is still wet, add mini M&Ms to the piped string, alternating colors and leaving space between each candy.
