Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. In a large bowl, combine milk, water, sugar, yeast, oil, and salt; add garlic and chopped onions, if desired.

  3. Gradually mix in flour until a stiff dough forms.

  4. Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead for 8 minutes.

  5. Place dough in a greased bowl, flip to coat, then cover and let rise in a warm place for 45 minutes or until doubled.

  6. Punch down the dough, then knead on a floured surface for 5 minutes.

  7. Divide dough into two equal portions and shape them into loaves.

  8. Grease two bread pans, place the shaped loaves inside, cover, and let rise for 45 minutes or until doubled.

  9. For a glossy finish, brush the tops with egg white, then bake for 1 hour.

  10. Remove from pans and cool completely on a rack.
