Chocolate Upside Down Cake

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F and prepare an 8-inch square or 9-inch round baking pan by greasing and flouring it.

  2. Combine 3/4 cup granulated sugar, flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.

  3. Melt unsweetened chocolate with butter, then add this mixture to the dry ingredients along with milk and vanilla; beat until smooth.

  4. Spoon the cake batter into the prepared pan and spread it evenly.

  5. Separately, combine 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and unsweetened cocoa; sprinkle this mixture evenly over the batter.

  6. Start boiling 3/4 cup of water.

  7. Carefully pour the boiling water evenly over the topping in the pan.

  8. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes.

  9. Remove the cake, invert it onto a serving plate while still hot, and scrape any remaining topping from the pan over the inverted cake.

  10. Serve warm or cold.
