Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F (180 C/Gas 4) and lightly butter a 10 x 15 x 1-inch sheet pan.

  2. Cream 1 cup butter with brown sugar, then beat in eggs and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract.

  3. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and 1 teaspoon salt, then stir in oats; blend this dry mixture into the creamed ingredients.

  4. Press three-quarters of the oat mixture into the prepared pan, reserving the rest.

  5. In a saucepan over low heat, combine sweetened condensed milk, chocolate chips, 2 tablespoons butter, and 1/2 teaspoon salt; stir until melted and smooth, then mix in 2 teaspoons vanilla and the chopped nuts.

  6. Spread the chocolate filling over the pressed crust, then crumble the remaining oat mixture evenly on top.

  7. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, then cool completely before cutting into squares.
