Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 F and prepare a 9-inch square baking pan by greasing and flouring it.

  2. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, and salt.

  3. Add oil, buttermilk, vanilla, and beaten egg to the dry ingredients, then whisk until well blended.

  4. Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for 35 to 40 minutes; allow it to cool slightly.

  5. Combine all topping ingredients in a small bowl, stirring until well blended.

  6. Spread the topping over the warm cake and broil it 4 inches from heat for 3 minutes, or until browned and bubbly.
