Instructions

  1. Combine vegetable oil, vinegar, soy sauce, and mustard in a bowl; add beef, mix, cover, and marinate in the refrigerator for 6 to 8 hours or overnight.

  2. Dice one onion, slice the second into half-moons, and cut the green pepper into strips.

  3. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Remove beef from the marinade, reserving it, and brown the beef on all sides. Set beef aside.

  4. Add diced onions and the reserved marinade to the skillet; cook over medium heat until onions are soft.

  5. Stir in garlic and diced tomatoes; cook until softened and most liquid evaporates.

  6. Add tomato paste, green pepper, sliced onions, and oregano; cook for 1 to 2 minutes.

  7. Return browned beef to the skillet. Add beef bouillon and 1 to 2 cups water (or beef stock) to cover the beef. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 1 to 2 hours until beef is tender.

  8. In a small bowl, whisk cachaça (or rum), cornstarch, and chile pepper paste until cornstarch dissolves. Stir this mixture into the beef until the sauce thickens. Add capers and green onions, then remove from heat.

  9. Allow the beef mixture to cool slightly before filling sandwich rolls.
