Instructions

  1. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat.

  2. Add apples and 1 tablespoon sugar, then sauté for 6 to 8 minutes until tender.

  3. Sprinkle in the remaining sugar, cinnamon, and lemon zest; toss and cook for 2 more minutes until caramelized and crisp-tender.

  4. Transfer apples with a slotted spoon to a serving bowl.

  5. Increase heat to high, add apple cider to the skillet, scraping up browned bits.

  6. Reduce heat slightly and simmer the cider and pan juices for 1 to 3 minutes until the sauce thickens.

  7. For a thicker sauce, dissolve cornstarch in a teaspoon of water, stir into the sauce, and cook for a few minutes until thickened.

  8. Pour the sauce over the warm apples and serve immediately.
