Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F.

  2. Line a 15x10-inch baking sheet with non-stick foil and spray it.

  3. Combine flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt in one bowl.

  4. In a separate bowl, mix vegetable oil, buttermilk, egg, and vanilla extract until blended.

  5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until the cake batter is smooth.

  6. Pour and spread the batter evenly onto the prepared baking sheet.

  7. Bake for 10 minutes at 350 F, then cool completely.

  8. Prepare frosting: In a stand mixer, combine confectioners' sugar and butter, adding milk for desired consistency, then mix in vanilla extract.

  9. Fill a piping bag with the prepared frosting.

  10. Cut 2 1/2 inch cake circles; reserve remaining cake scraps.

  11. Place one cake circle in the bottom of each 4 ounce canning jar, then pipe a swirl of frosting.

  12. Continue layering cake circles and frosting until the jars are full.

  13. Sprinkle reserved cake crumbs on top.

  14. Cap the jars with lids and refrigerate; allow them to reach room temperature before serving.
