Bratapfeln (German Baked Apples) Recipe

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 450 F.

  2. Core the apples.

  3. Mix butter, sugar, raisins, and walnuts for the filling.

  4. Stuff the prepared apples with the filling.

  5. Place apples in a buttered baking dish and cover.

  6. Bake for 45 to 60 minutes, or until tender.

  7. Meanwhile, prepare vanilla sauce: Beat egg yolks with both sugars until thick and pale.

  8. Bring 2 cups of milk to a boil, then slowly whisk the hot milk into the egg yolk mixture.

  9. Pour the mixture back into the saucepan and heat, without boiling, until it coats the back of a spoon.

  10. Remove from heat, stir in vanilla extract (if using), and serve warm over the baked apples.
