Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F with two racks, then grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until fluffy, then beat in eggs one at a time.

  3. Next, incorporate vinegar, royal blue and violet food coloring, and vanilla extract into the mixture.

  4. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together cake flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.

  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, alternating with buttermilk, beating well after each addition.

  6. Divide the batter evenly into the prepared pans and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, rotating half way through, until a toothpick comes out clean.

  7. Cool cake layers in pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.

  8. For the frosting, beat confectioners' sugar, butter, cream cheese, and vanilla in a large bowl until smooth.

  9. Assemble the cake by frosting the first cooled layer, then topping with the second layer, and frosting the top and sides. Refrigerate until serving.
