Black and White Cookies
These iconic New York-style deli cookies feature a tender cake-like base topped with distinctive half-chocolate and half-vanilla frosting.

Instructions

Preheat oven to 375°F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Beat butter and sugar in a large bowl until fluffy.

Add eggs one at a time, then milk, vanilla, and lemon extracts, mixing until smooth.

In a separate bowl, combine cake flour, all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.

Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.

Scoop 1/4 cup batter for each cookie, shaping into 4-inch circles on baking sheets, spacing 2 inches apart.

Bake 15-17 minutes until edges brown, then cool completely on a wire rack.

For frosting, mix powdered sugar with boiling water until thick and spreadable.

Transfer half of the frosting to a double boiler, add chocolate, and warm until melted and smooth, adding water if needed for consistency.

Invert cooled cookies and frost one half with vanilla and the other half with chocolate frosting. Allow frosting to set before serving.
