Instructions

  1. Cut unsalted butter into small pieces and melt in a light-colored saucepan over medium heat, stirring gently.

  2. Continue heating and stirring as the butter melts, sputters, and transforms into a light golden color; adjust heat if sputtering is excessive.

  3. After the sputtering subsides, reduce heat further; the butter will foam and deepen to a golden tan.

  4. Cook until the butter reaches a warm brown color, distinct brown milk solids appear, and a toasted aroma is released.

  5. Immediately remove the pan from heat and transfer the brown butter to a heatproof bowl to prevent further cooking.
