Preheat the oven to 375 F and prepare a baking sheet.

Beat butter until creamy, then add brown and granulated sugars, beating for 2-3 minutes until light and fluffy.

Incorporate the egg and vanilla into the butter mixture, beating until well blended.

Combine flour, salt, and baking soda in a separate bowl.

Add the dry flour mixture to the wet butter mixture, stirring until just blended.

Fold in chocolate chips and optional nuts.

Optionally, chill the dough for 1 hour to overnight.

Drop tablespoon-sized portions of dough onto the baking sheet, spacing them 2 inches apart.
