Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 F and prepare a baking sheet.

  2. Beat butter until creamy, then add brown and granulated sugars, beating for 2-3 minutes until light and fluffy.

  3. Incorporate the egg and vanilla into the butter mixture, beating until well blended.

  4. Combine flour, salt, and baking soda in a separate bowl.

  5. Add the dry flour mixture to the wet butter mixture, stirring until just blended.

  6. Fold in chocolate chips and optional nuts.

  7. Optionally, chill the dough for 1 hour to overnight.

  8. Drop tablespoon-sized portions of dough onto the baking sheet, spacing them 2 inches apart.

  9. Bake for 10 minutes until set and lightly browned.

  10. Cool cookies on the baking sheet for 1 minute, then transfer to a rack.
