Beef Bobotie

A classic South African baked dish, bobotie features spiced minced meat topped with a savory custard.

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 340F (170C).

  2. Sauté onions, garlic, and ginger in butter until soft.

  3. Add spices, chutney, minced beef, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and stock cube; brown the mince.

  4. Stir pre-soaked bread into the mince mixture.

  5. Transfer the mixture to a baking dish, cover, and bake for 40 minutes.

  6. While baking, beat egg, milk, turmeric, cream, salt, and pepper to prepare the custard.

  7. Remove mince from the oven, uncover, and pour the custard over it.

  8. Arrange bay leaves on top and return to the oven for 15 minutes, until the custard is golden brown.

  9. Serve with rice and optional chutney.
