Instructions

  1. Preheat oven as per cake mix directions. Line a baking sheet with foil and spray with nonstick cooking spray.

  2. Prepare and bake a 9x13 cake according to package instructions, then cool completely.

  3. Crumble the cooled cake into a large bowl until finely broken.

  4. Add three-quarters of the frosting to the cake crumbs and mix until moist enough to form a ball; add more frosting if needed.

  5. Place 20 candy coating discs on the prepared baking sheet. Form 20 small half-sphere cake balls for heads and place one on each disc, pressing down.

  6. Form the remaining cake mixture into 20 larger, 1 1/2-inch balls for bodies. Refrigerate all cake balls until firm, 1-2 hours.

  7. Melt white candy coating in a microwave-safe bowl, stirring every 45 seconds.

  8. Dip each cake head into the melted white coating, removing excess. Place on the baking sheet and refrigerate for 15 minutes to set.

  9. Re-warm coating if needed. Dip each body, place on the baking sheet, and attach a set head while the coating is still wet. Refrigerate to set completely.

  10. Melt orange, black, and red candy coatings separately. Create gray coating by mixing black and white. Transfer all colors to piping cones or bags with snipped holes.

  11. Pipe black circles, red accents, and orange and gray designs onto the cake balls. Re-warm coating in 10-second intervals if it hardens.

  12. Refrigerate the decorated cake balls until completely set. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
