Instructions

  1. Melt butter in a saucepan over low heat.

  2. Stir in flour and whisk constantly for 2 minutes without browning.

  3. Gradually whisk in milk, cooking over low heat and stirring continuously until the sauce thickens; continue cooking for 1 more minute and season with salt and pepper.

  4. Optionally, stir in heavy cream for a richer sauce.
