Basic Chili Con Carne With Beef and Beans

Instructions

  1. If using dry beans, rinse them, soak overnight, then drain, cover with fresh water, and simmer for 1 hour until tender.

  2. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet; brown ground beef, onion, and bell pepper until the beef is no longer pink.

  3. Stir in tomatoes, tomato sauce, chile and jalapeño peppers, seasonings, and bay leaf.

  4. Cover and simmer for 1 hour and 30 minutes, adding water if needed and stirring frequently.

  5. Add cooked or canned beans and heat through.

  6. Serve with desired toppings.
