Basic Buttermilk Cornbread Recipe

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 F (200 C) and heat a cast-iron skillet within.

  2. Combine cornmeal, flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in one bowl.

  3. In another bowl, beat the egg with buttermilk and 2 tablespoons melted butter (if using).

  4. Mix the wet and dry ingredients until blended.

  5. Remove the hot skillet, add 1 tablespoon oil, butter, or bacon drippings.

  6. Spread batter in the skillet and bake 15 to 20 minutes, until lightly browned.
