Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 300°F.
-
To make the syrup, combine 4 cups sugar, lemon juice, and water in a saucepan; boil for 10 minutes. Stir in rosewater, bring to a boil, then remove from heat and let cool completely.
-
For the filling, mix 1/2 cup sugar and nuts in a bowl, adding cinnamon if using walnuts.
-
Grease a 9x12 inch baking pan with butter. Unroll phyllo dough and cut to fit the pan.
-
Layer two phyllo sheets in the pan, brush with butter, and repeat until half of the dough is used.
-
Spread 1 cup of the nut mixture evenly over the last dough layer.
-
Continue layering two phyllo sheets, brushing with butter, until all nut mixture is incorporated. Brush the top phyllo layer with butter.
-
Cut the baklava into 3-inch squares, then halve each square diagonally to form triangles.
-
Bake for 75 minutes, or until golden brown.
-
Remove from oven and immediately pour the cooled syrup over the hot baklava.
