Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 375 F and line a baking sheet with greased parchment paper.
-
Cut 1 large apple into 9 to 10 rounds, each about 1/4-inch thick, then use a small cutter to remove the core from each slice to form "doughnuts".
-
Mix 3 tablespoons sugar and 2 teaspoons cinnamon in a dish, then lightly coat the apple slices in this mixture.
-
Roll 1 thawed sheet of puff pastry slightly, then cut it into 1/4-inch wide strips.
-
Wrap each apple ring with at least 2 puff pastry strips, threading through the center hole, then transfer to the prepared baking sheet, spacing them apart.
-
Brush each "doughnut" with heavy cream or beaten egg, and sprinkle with a pinch of the remaining spiced sugar mixture.
-
Bake for 15 to 20 minutes until the puff pastry is golden brown and puffy.
-
While baking, gently warm 1/4 cup caramel sauce and mix in 1/2 teaspoon optional miso.
-
After baking and slight cooling, sprinkle with more spiced sugar, drizzle with caramel sauce, and garnish with optional toppings.
