Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 F and line a baking sheet with greased parchment paper.

  2. Cut 1 large apple into 9 to 10 rounds, each about 1/4-inch thick, then use a small cutter to remove the core from each slice to form "doughnuts".

  3. Mix 3 tablespoons sugar and 2 teaspoons cinnamon in a dish, then lightly coat the apple slices in this mixture.

  4. Roll 1 thawed sheet of puff pastry slightly, then cut it into 1/4-inch wide strips.

  5. Wrap each apple ring with at least 2 puff pastry strips, threading through the center hole, then transfer to the prepared baking sheet, spacing them apart.

  6. Brush each "doughnut" with heavy cream or beaten egg, and sprinkle with a pinch of the remaining spiced sugar mixture.

  7. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes until the puff pastry is golden brown and puffy.

  8. While baking, gently warm 1/4 cup caramel sauce and mix in 1/2 teaspoon optional miso.

  9. After baking and slight cooling, sprinkle with more spiced sugar, drizzle with caramel sauce, and garnish with optional toppings.
