Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 F and line a baking sheet.

  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, nutmeg, and 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon; cut in butter until crumbly. Stir in chopped apples.

  3. Mix buttermilk and 1 teaspoon vanilla, then stir into the flour mixture until just moistened.

  4. Turn dough onto a floured surface, knead briefly until cohesive, then pat into a 3/4-inch thick circle and cut with 2-inch biscuit cutters.

  5. Place biscuits on the prepared baking sheet. Optionally, brush tops with cream or milk and sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar. Bake for 12 to 14 minutes until lightly browned, then cool on racks.

  6. For the glaze, combine confectioners' sugar, butter, and vanilla; gradually beat in hot water until a drizzling consistency is achieved. Drizzle over cooled biscuits.

  7. Serve biscuits cool or warmed.
