Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F and grease a 9-inch square baking dish.

  2. Toss 4 to 6 peeled, cored, and thinly sliced apples with 2 tablespoons lemon juice.

  3. In a food processor, combine 3/4 cup all-purpose flour, 3/4 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 1 pinch ground cloves, and 1/4 teaspoon salt; pulse to blend.

  4. Add 1/2 cup chilled, cubed unsalted butter and process until crumbs form.

  5. Layer half the apples in the dish, then top with half the crumb mixture; repeat with remaining apples and crumbs.

  6. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes until browned and tender, then cool slightly before serving.
