Amerikaner - Cake-Like Cookies Frosted on the Bottom

Amerikaner are cake-like cookies, traditionally glazed with confectioners' sugar and chocolate, reminiscent of classic New York style half-and-half cookies.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350F (175C).

  2. Cream butter and sugar, then beat in eggs one at a time, followed by vanilla or rum flavoring.

  3. Sift flour with baking powder; gradually add to the batter, alternating with milk, mixing until combined.

  4. Drop 1/4 cup portions of dough onto cookie sheets and bake for 20 minutes.

  5. While still warm, glaze the underside of each cookie with a mixture of confectioners' sugar, rum, and water.

  6. Optionally, prepare a chocolate glaze by melting chocolate and butter in the microwave, then stirring in confectioners' sugar and hot water until smooth; apply to half of each cookie.
