Instructions
-
Combine milk, sugar, and yeast, then let the mixture stand for 5 to 10 minutes.
-
Whisk in half of the flour, an egg, 3 tablespoons melted butter, salt, and 1 teaspoon vanilla until well blended.
-
Stir in the remaining flour with a spoon to create a soft dough, then let it rest for 5 minutes.
-
Knead the dough on a floured surface for 7 to 8 minutes, adding more flour as needed to prevent sticking.
-
Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, turning to coat, then cover and let it rise for 1 to 1.5 hours until doubled.
-
Punch down the dough, roll it to a 1/4 to 3/8 inch thickness, and cut out rounds and holes; reroll any scraps.
-
Place the cutout doughnuts on lightly floured parchment paper, cover, and let them rise for about 30 minutes until doubled.
-
Preheat the air fryer to 350 F for 3 minutes, ensuring the basket is brushed with vegetable oil.
-
Cook 2 to 4 doughnuts and holes at a time for 4 minutes, brushing them with melted butter or oil before cooking; remove and repeat with the rest.
-
For the glaze, sift confectioners' sugar into a bowl, then mix in 3 tablespoons melted butter, 2 tablespoons hot water, and 1 teaspoon vanilla, adjusting water as needed for a thin consistency; add maple flavoring if desired.
-
Dip the tops of the cooked doughnuts into the glaze and place them on a rack to set.
-
Optionally, double dip the doughnuts for a thicker glaze or add sprinkles while the glaze is still wet.
