Instructions

  1. Combine milk, sugar, and yeast, then let the mixture stand for 5 to 10 minutes.

  2. Whisk in half of the flour, an egg, 3 tablespoons melted butter, salt, and 1 teaspoon vanilla until well blended.

  3. Stir in the remaining flour with a spoon to create a soft dough, then let it rest for 5 minutes.

  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 7 to 8 minutes, adding more flour as needed to prevent sticking.

  5. Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, turning to coat, then cover and let it rise for 1 to 1.5 hours until doubled.

  6. Punch down the dough, roll it to a 1/4 to 3/8 inch thickness, and cut out rounds and holes; reroll any scraps.

  7. Place the cutout doughnuts on lightly floured parchment paper, cover, and let them rise for about 30 minutes until doubled.

  8. Preheat the air fryer to 350 F for 3 minutes, ensuring the basket is brushed with vegetable oil.

  9. Cook 2 to 4 doughnuts and holes at a time for 4 minutes, brushing them with melted butter or oil before cooking; remove and repeat with the rest.

  10. For the glaze, sift confectioners' sugar into a bowl, then mix in 3 tablespoons melted butter, 2 tablespoons hot water, and 1 teaspoon vanilla, adjusting water as needed for a thin consistency; add maple flavoring if desired.

  11. Dip the tops of the cooked doughnuts into the glaze and place them on a rack to set.

  12. Optionally, double dip the doughnuts for a thicker glaze or add sprinkles while the glaze is still wet.
